The skull sculpture in contemporary art: symbol, vanity, and artistic reinterpretation
Share
Through my metal lace skull sculptures, I explore the timeless symbol of vanitas to give it a contemporary, poetic, and sculptural interpretation. Between memory, light, and material, each work transforms a universal symbol into an artistic presence.
The theme of the skull in art history is immensely rich, spanning eras, cultures, and interpretations. This article does not aim to offer an exhaustive reading but rather to share how this universal symbol today nourishes my own sculptural approach.
Why does the skull fascinate so much in art?
For centuries, the skull has crossed art history as a universal symbol. It evokes the fragility of existence, the passage of time, memory, but also the power of life itself.
In the tradition of vanitas, it reminds us that all things are ephemeral. But far from being solely dark or mournful, this symbol has a philosophical depth that continues to fascinate artists and collectors.
It is this symbolic richness that led me to work with the skull in several of my contemporary sculptures.
My vision of contemporary vanitas sculpture
When I create a skull sculpture, I do not seek to represent death. I seek to represent what it reveals about life.
Through my work with metal lace, the material becomes light, openwork, almost immaterial. The skull loses its anatomical harshness to become an airy structure, pierced by light.
This transparency transforms the symbol:
- heaviness becomes lightness,
- finitude becomes movement,
- shadow becomes light.
Each vanitas sculpture thus becomes a visual meditation on time, transformation, and the beauty of the ephemeral.

“I do not sculpt death, I sculpt what it reveals about life.”
Why incorporate symbols into my skull sculptures?
Some of my works combine the shape of the skull with other sculpted symbols: scallop shell, flame, bottle, chalice, iconic emblems like the Chanel logo, or even 24-carat gold leaf on certain pieces.
These elements enrich the interpretation of the work and create tension between several symbolic universes.
Spirituality and materiality
The skull confronted with sacred or ritual symbols questions our relationship to the sacred.
Luxury and vanity
The addition of precious elements like gold leaf or symbols of prestige questions desire, appearance, and value.
Memory and identity
Each combination creates a narrative unique to the sculpture.
Thus, each work becomes a unique interpretation of the theme of vanity.

I also create custom creations for collectors seeking a personalized work:
- choice of associated symbol,
- specific dimensions,
- steel, bronze, or gilded finish,
- adaptation to a specific location.
Each commission then becomes a work designed in dialogue with its future owner.

A skull sculpture as a contemporary work of art
Choosing a contemporary skull sculpture is not choosing a simple decorative object.
It is about integrating into a space a work charged with symbols, contrasts, and depth. A sculptural presence that draws the eye, questions, and interacts with the light.
Through my metal vanities, I seek to transform a universal symbol into a work of contemplation — both powerful, delicate, and timeless.
