The metal lace allows the volume to breathe: it suggests the contours of the face and bust without enclosing them in a solid mass. The empty spaces become as important as the material, allowing light to pass through the work and reveal its lines from different angles.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe arabesques that run across the sculpture evoke the interlacing patterns, ornaments, and delicate motifs of medieval manuscripts. I chose to emphasize some of these lines with a finish of gilded metal leaf. This metallic gilding adds luminous accents that contrast with the dark texture of the steel.
