Buffon: Marten – The Wild Elegance of an Iconic Animal
With this sculpture, I wanted to pay tribute to the marten, this small agile and mysterious carnivore, a true emblem of our forests. Inspired by Buffon's naturalistic approach, this work seeks to capture the liveliness and flexibility of the animal. The marten is here frozen in a suspended movement, its slender silhouette shaped by a succession of bronze and steel drops that recreate the silky texture of its fur.
The metal lacework technique suggests the lightness of the animal while asserting its wild presence. The bronze, used in precise touches, brings golden reflections that recall the characteristic orange throat of the pine marten. This is a piece from the Intimate range that celebrates biodiversity and the discretion of often invisible wildlife, transforming a woodland inhabitant into a precious and timeless work of art.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
Why this reference to "Buffon" in the title? The title refers to Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon, the famous French naturalist. Like him, I seek to observe and convey the beauty of the animal world, but using fused metal rather than a pen to describe the anatomy and character of the marten.
How are the bronze and steel drops worked? I use the dripping technique: I melt the metals at very high temperatures and let the drops fuse together. This process creates an openwork metal lace that gives the marten its appearance of being both robust and airy.
Is this a unique work? Yes, absolutely. Each marten is sculpted without a mold. The arrangement of the metal drops and the shades of the patina are the result of instinctive manual work, ensuring that your sculpture is a one-of-a-kind piece in the world.
What metals make up this sculpture? The work is an alloy of bronze and steel. Steel provides structure and strength, while bronze is used for its nobility, warm reflections, and ability to capture light, evoking the animal’s coat.
How to care for this animal sculpture? A professional protective varnish is applied to stabilize the metals. For maintenance, a simple dusting with a soft brush is enough to preserve the shine of the drops and the fineness of the mesh.
