Skull: A Fully Sculpted Vanitas
With "Skull," I explored the theme of vanitas through the lens of absolute volume. Unlike a mask or a bas-relief, this sculpture is created in rond-bosse: it is fully finished on all sides, allowing the anatomy of the skull to be appreciated from every angle. By using steel and bronze lace, I sought to dematerialize this often heavy figure to keep only the essential: a metallic mesh where emptiness and light become the true components of the form.
The drip fusion work outlines the eye sockets, cheekbones, and jaw with organic precision. The bronze veins the steel, bringing warm and precious reflections that transform this symbol of finitude into an object of serene contemplation. It is a piece from the Intimate range that plays on the contrast between the hardness of metal and the lightness of transparency, reminding us that behind the physical appearance lies a structure of light and spirit.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
What does the term "en rond-bosse" mean for this sculpture? Rond-bosse refers to a sculpture made in full volume, which can be viewed and observed from 360 degrees. This skull is not just a simple facade; it is fully sculpted, from the front to the occiput, offering a complete physical presence in space.
What metals make up this skull? The work is a combination of bronze and steel. The steel provides structure and strength, while the bronze, applied by manual fusion, enriches the patina with golden hues, evoking the preciousness of an ancient relic.
How is the metal lace constructed? It is built without any mold using the dripping technique (drip fusion). Each metal point is applied by hand, creating an irregular and open mesh. This method ensures that light circulates inside the skull itself, revealing its internal structure.
Is this a unique piece? Yes, absolutely. The manual fusion process makes any identical reproduction impossible. The "Skull 2-24" is an original creation signed by Philippe Buil, delivered with its certificate of authenticity.
How should this vanitas be maintained? A professional protective varnish shields the metals from oxidation. A simple dusting with a soft-bristle brush is enough to clean the gaps in the metal lace and preserve the bronze’s shine.
