With this bronze vanity skull sculpture, I wanted to bring forth the symbolism of human vanity at the heart of a metal flame.
In this sculpture titled Flame Vanity 40-22, I explore the timeless theme of vanity. The skull appears suspended in a flame, between matter and light, between presence and disappearance.
The skull is made of bronze lace, a technique that gives the material a lively and organic texture. The bronze reliefs catch the light and give this skull an almost archaeological presence, like a relic emerging from time.
The flame supporting the sculpture is shaped from steel lace. It structures the composition with a powerful vertical movement and seems to lift the skull in a slow elevation, like an apparition.
The upper part of this flame is covered with 24-carat gold leaf. The gold adds a luminous and symbolic dimension. It evokes wealth, sacredness, and the fragility of what humans seek to preserve.
In this work, I wanted to create a dialogue between the density of bronze, the strength of steel, and the light of gold.
With Flame Vanity 40-22, I aim to transform the symbolism of vanity into a sculptural presence that is both powerful and fragile.

What is the meaning of a vanitas sculpture with a skull?
A vanitas sculpture with a skull belongs to an ancient artistic tradition called Vanitas. It reminds us of the fragility of human life and the fleeting nature of wealth and power.
In contemporary art, this symbol is often reinterpreted to evoke memory, time, and the transformation of matter.
What materials is the Flamme Vanité 40-22 sculpture made of?
The Flamme Vanité 40-22 sculpture is made with several metals:
- a skull in bronze lace
- a flame in steel lace
- a top part covered with 24-carat gold leaf
- a round steel base
This combination of materials creates a contrast between the density of bronze, the strength of steel, and the lightness of gold.
What is metal lace in sculpture?
Metal lace is a sculptural technique that involves working the metal in an openwork manner to create organic and irregular textures.
This technique gives the sculpture an appearance that is both powerful and light, as if the material transforms into a living structure.
Why is the skull an important symbol in art?
The skull is a universal symbol present in art history for centuries. It is used to evoke:
- the passage of time
- human memory
- the fragility of existence
- the transformation of matter
In contemporary art, it also becomes a strong, recognizable, and expressive sculptural form.
Where to place a contemporary skull sculpture in an interior?
A contemporary skull sculpture can be placed in different spaces:
- on an entry console
- on a bookshelf
- in an office
- in a contemporary living room
- in an art collection space
Thanks to its metallic materials and texture contrasts, it becomes a central decorative and artistic piece.
