A dark metal architecture where the light of the labradorites seems suspended between mineral strength and fragility.

In this sculpture, I aimed to create an almost organic form, like a mineral growth slowly rising in space.

I work steel as a living material. Through welding, I let it stretch, branch out, and thicken until it creates a raw lace, a network of lines that seem both fragile and powerful. The structure rises vertically, like an inner movement seeking the light.

At the heart of this metal architecture, I have integrated two labradorites. I love this stone for its depth and the iridescent reflections it reveals when light passes through it. Its changing flashes interact with the dark, mineral texture of the steel, creating a balance between shadow and light.

In my work, the stone is never simply placed: it becomes an anchor point around which the sculpture is built.

Each sculpture is a unique piece that I create entirely by hand in my workshop. The metal intentionally retains its textures and imperfections, traces of fire, material, and gesture.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What are the aesthetic properties of Labradorite in this piece? Labradorite is famous for its "labradorescence," a play of metallic colors (blue, green, gold) that only appears under certain light angles. By embedding it in dark steel lace, I create a contrast that enhances these magical flashes.

How is the stone held in the metal lace? The stone is not simply glued; it is truly "set" by the fusion of the steel. I build the metal mesh directly around the Labradorite, creating a custom organic cage that holds it firmly while leaving it visible from all sides.

Does the steel risk damaging or scratching the stone? No, the creation process is controlled so that the heat of the fusion does not alter the stone's properties. Once solidified, the steel forms a protective and stable cradle that preserves the mineral's integrity.

Is this a unique piece? Yes, absolutely. Each Labradorite stone has its own reflections and shape. Likewise, the steel lace is handcrafted without a mold. The 32-15 sculpture is therefore a one-of-a-kind piece in the world, signed Philippe Buil.

How to care for this mineral sculpture? The steel is protected by a professional varnish. For the stone, a simple soft, dry cloth is enough to remove fingerprints. For the gaps in the lace, a soft-bristled brush is ideal to dislodge dust without scratching the mineral.
