The Passage: The Alchemy of the Present Moment and the Leap into the Unpredictable
With "The Passage," I explored the theme of the transition between two worlds, that pivotal moment when everything shifts. This vanitas, crafted in a lace of steel and bronze, is not an end in itself but a symbol of metamorphosis. It embodies the unpredictability of fate and reminds us of the power of the "Carpe Diem" cherished by alchemists: the necessity to transform the lead of our fears into the gold of the present moment. Life is not prepared for; it is lived in the passage.
The structure, both solid and openwork, allows emptiness to flow through, highlighting the fragility of our passage on earth. The bronze, with its golden drips, seems to nourish the skull like a breath of persistent life, an alchemical energy that transcends matter. It is a work from the Intimate range that invites embracing the unknown with courage, reminding us that every second is an open door to a new world, a vibrant celebration of consciousness here and now.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
What does "The Passage" represent in this sculpture? It is the metaphorical passage between material existence and the immaterial, but also the passage from one state of consciousness to another. It is the acceptance of the unpredictable as a driving force of life, an invitation to no longer fear change.
How is this vanitas connected to alchemy? Alchemy is the art of transformation. Here, the use of bronze fused onto steel symbolizes this transmutation of raw matter into something spiritual and luminous. The alchemical "Carpe Diem" is the ability to extract beauty and wisdom from every moment.
How is the metal lace made? It is created by manual drip fusion, drop by drop (dripping). I do not work with molds; each metal point is placed to build volume while preserving voids. It is this transparency that gives the sculpture its airy and mysterious character.
Is this a unique piece? Yes, absolutely. The creative process is based on instinct and the instant fusion of metal, making it impossible to reproduce the same lace pattern twice. "The Passage" is an original work signed Philippe Buil.
How should this symbolic work be maintained? The steel and bronze are protected by an invisible professional varnish that prevents any oxidation. Regular dusting with a soft brush is enough to preserve the clarity of the lace and the shine of the bronze reflections.
