Muse 144-21: A vertical dialogue between classical heritage and contemporary fusion
With this "Muse," I wanted to revisit an iconic figure from art history through my own artistic language. This work is freely inspired by the muse created in 1929 by sculptor Joseph Lamberton for the musical world of Jules Massenet. I aimed to extend this artistic dialogue by transforming this academic figure into a slender silhouette, almost suspended, like a vertical breath frozen in metal.
The body of the Muse appears in an openwork material, a steel lace where light flows freely, revealing the raw texture and fire scars. On one side of the sculpture, a line of molten brass slides along the silhouette. This bright line highlights the form and creates a striking contrast between the deep shadow of the steel and the sunny shine of the brass. It is a piece from the Intimate range that deliberately retains the traces of fusion and gesture, evoking a timeless presence situated between the artistic memory of the early 20th century and contemporary expression.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
What is Joseph Lamberton's influence on this sculpture? Lamberton sculpted a muse for the Massenet monument in Saint-Étienne in 1929. I reappropriated the grace of this historic figure to translate it into metal lace. It is a tribute to classical heritage reinterpreted through the modern technique of drip fusion.
What does the brass line on the side of the silhouette symbolize? This line of molten brass acts like a "lifeline" or a streak of light. It breaks the sobriety of the steel to emphasize the curve of the muse and bring a golden warmth that evokes the glow of artistic inspiration.
How does the sculpture stand despite its slenderness? Drip-fused steel is an extremely strong material. The slender verticality is designed to offer perfect balance, allowing the Muse to rise with apparent lightness without compromising its stability on its base.
Is this a unique piece? Yes, absolutely. Each sculpture is entirely handmade in my studio. Since I work without molds, the flow of brass and the steel mesh are dictated by the gesture of the moment, making each piece strictly unique.
How does light interact with the Muse? The metal lace transforms the sculpture into a true light receptor. Placed in front of a light-colored wall or a light source, it casts a complex lace shadow, extending the presence of the Muse beyond its physical structure.
