With Virvoltant, I wanted to explore the strength and softness of the male body. This sculpture represents a male bust made using my metal lace technique, where steel and bronze unfold in an open weave that lets the material breathe.
I always try to make the weight of the metal disappear. The material fragments, almost weaving like a skin of light, allowing the eye to flow through the sculpture.
The torso then appears in a subtle tension between power and lightness. The muscles are not locked in mass; they are suggested, as if the body is gradually born from air and light.
In this search for balance, I often think of the great tradition of classical statuary, where the strength of the body remains inhabited by an almost silent softness. One can feel the harmony of David by Michelangelo, or the ideal of proportion and movement developed by Polyclitus.
The metal lace is then covered with 24-carat gold leaf. The gold captures the light and diffuses it through the metal structure, revealing every vibration and relief of the sculpture.
In my work, I like the form to remain open, almost in motion. The sculpture does not impose itself by mass: it gradually appears in space.
With Virvoltant, I wanted the metal to become breath and light: a body suspended between power, balance, and poetry.
