This metal skull wall sculpture revisits the age-old theme of vanitas in a contemporary interpretation, blending Baroque elegance and steel lace.

I imagined this work around a skull at the heart of an ornamental frame inspired by antique decorations. I love the contrast between the central figure, a symbol of the ephemeral nature of existence, and the richness of the arabesques surrounding it.

Made from steel lace, this sculpture combines the metal's raised details and openwork forms with areas covered in silver metal leaf. The reflections catch the light and reveal the details of this composition, where raw material meets ornamental finesse.

With Vanité, the Elegance of the Ephemeral, I wanted to remind viewers that the beauty of life also lies in its precious and fleeting nature. A unique wall sculpture that brings an artistic presence and symbolic dimension to your home.

Part of my Intimate Sculpturesand my Skull and Wall Sculptures collections, Vanité, the Elegance of the Ephemeral will naturally find its place in a living room, entryway, or living space.

Learn more about the sculpture “Vanité, the Elegance of the Ephemeral”

What does the Vanité, the Elegance of the Ephemeral wall sculpture represent?

This sculpture depicts a human skull at the center of an ornamental frame inspired by Baroque aesthetics. It revisits the artistic theme of vanitas and evokes the passage of time, the fragility of existence, and the preciousness of life.

What is the meaning of the theme of vanity in art?

Vanity is an ancient artistic theme that recalls the fleeting nature of human existence. The skull is one of its best-known symbols. It invites us to reflect on time, fleeting beauty and the value of each moment.

What material is this wall sculpture made of?

Vanity, the Elegance of the Ephemeral is made of steel using the metal lace technique. This technique makes it possible to create reliefs, organic textures and openwork shapes that give the work its sculptural character.

How are the silver reflections achieved?

Some parts of the sculpture are covered with silver leaf. This finish catches the light and highlights the skull's reliefs and the frame's ornamental details.

What is the artistic style of this sculpture?

This work belongs to contemporary figurative sculpture. It combines a traditional subject, the skull, with an ornamental composition inspired by the Baroque and a modern metalworking technique.

Why does the frame have Baroque ornaments?

The frame's arabesques and relief details evoke the decorative richness of Baroque art. They contrast with the symbolic nature of the skull and turn this depiction into a true wall composition.

Where should you install a wall sculpture depicting a skull?

This sculpture can be installed in a living room, office, library or reception area. Its baroque and contemporary aesthetic makes it a focal point in a classic, industrial or contemporary interior.

Is this sculpture a contemporary wall decoration?

Yes. It combines a recognizable figurative subject, a relief composition and an original metal lace technique. Its material, depth, and interplay of light and shadow set it apart from a traditional painting.

Which collection does Vanity, the Elegance of the Ephemeral belong to?

This work belongs to the Intimate Sculptures range, as well as the Skull collection and the Wall Sculptures collection. It is part of a body of work exploring the symbols, forms and expressions of contemporary sculpture.

Who created Vanity, the Elegance of the Ephemeral?

This wall sculpture is a creation by Philippe Buil, a contemporary sculptor who has developed his own metal lace technique. His work transforms steel into figurative, expressive sculptures that combine raw material, relief and metallic finishes.
